The oil mill, which dates back to the late 18th century, remained in operation until after World War II, preserving its original equipment for oil production until it was eventually replaced by modern technology. Restored in 1990, the building is now part of the Massa Marittima museum network. This 18th-19th century oil mill offers a significant historical glimpse into a farming civilization that has since disappeared, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to experience a visual reconstruction of daily life in the Maremma. What makes this oil mill especially captivating is the remarkable preservation of the entire facility, offering an authentic example of olive oil production powered by both human and animal labor. Notably, the large cogwheel, connected to a granite millstone via a lever to which a mule was harnessed, along with the strettoio, a manually operated oak press used to crush the olive paste, remain in excellent condition.
