At the top of Corso della Libertà, you can admire the 14th-century palace where, in 1380, Bernardino degli Albizzeschi was born, better known as Saint Bernardino of Siena. It was in Massa Marittima that he began preaching as a Franciscan friar.
Today, the palace is in an 18th-century style, and the only trace of the saint’s presence is a plaque, at the top of which is the Bernardine emblem with the Christ Trigram.
The people of Massa Marittima dedicated a city gate to him, and the painter Talani frescoed a painting in the Bishop’s Palace depicting the saint preaching in Massa Marittima.
He is also honored by the Balestro del Girifalco in May.
