This imposing tower and its sienese Fortress stand in the upper part of the medieval city centre, called Cittanuova.
The tower was built in 1228 by the will of the Free City of Massa Marittima and it has defensive purposes. The tower was partially destroyed when Siena conquered Massa Marittima in 1335, it was then rebuilt one third smaller and the sienese arch was added to the structure to link the tower to the new fortress.
The whole complex can be visited and it is actually the only part of the medieval walls where you can walk on. The tower is considered the best sightseeing spot in Massa Marittima.
For individuals with mobility issues, the Cassero is equipped with an external lift. To access it, please contact the Tower’s ticket office.
New LED lighting has been installed along the pathway, and the information and signage system has been upgraded and integrated with tactile maps and Braille writing to make the site accessible to the blind and visually impaired.
