It is only 5 minutes away from the city centre. It was originally a travertine cave and then converted into a museum once the mining activity in the area was already over: it was born in 1980 thanks to a group of retired miners who reproduced in detail a local mine. It is structured in three galleries about 700mt long. The path is quite flat and not particularly difficult, developed on just one level underneath the ground.
The guided tour shows the extraction techniques used throughout history, a mineral exhibition and the tools used by the workers back in the days.
The tour lasts about 45 minutes. The inner temperature is about 12°c, therefore we suggest to wear appropriate clothes.
ONLY GUIDED TOURS
In April 2023 “Subterraneo” was opened, a new museum dedicated to the history of mining in the area. It is organized in three exhibition halls, housing the heritage of artefacts and documents of the old Museum of Art and History of Mining. The visit to the gallery can thus be integrated by delving into historical and social aspects related to work in the mines through ancient maps, work tools, minerals, but also multimedia content.
