It is both a centre of marine environmental education and the headquarter of the Shark Studies Centre, that undertakes research studies in South Africa, Madagascar, Gibuti, Azzorre, Maldive and in the Mediterranean. It is located in Valpiana, just 10 minutes from Massa Marittima. It has around 40 mediterranean, tropical and atlantic tanks, including a tank with Blacktip sharks and Grey bamboo sharks. All together there are over 150 animal and plant species. The Explora Dinosaurs display is an exhibition about evolution, with full scale representations of prehistoric fishes and dinosaurs. The whole museum is ideal both for children and grown-ups.
A new pavilion dedicated to molluscs with exhibits of great scientific interest was opened in March 2022.
SPECIAL EVENTS: In summertime every Wednesday and Friday , at 4.30 pm there is an opportunity for visitors to see the sharks feeding, together with a guided tour of the sharks’ nursery and the sharks’ exhibition.
